Volunteering
How are volunteers a part of our ministry?
Volunteers are an essential part of our ministry because they build valuable relationships with our residents. Our program is a success because willing people take the time to reach out and provide love and acceptance to those in need. Without the relationships that volunteers create, our residents would fall between the cracks. Volunteers also work behind the scenes to keep our facility running at a minimal cost.
How do I get involved?
The first step to becoming a volunteer at My Father’s House is to attend a House Tour. There you will learn all the details of our program, our future goals and view our facility. To view the dates of our upcoming tours, click here. The next step is to fill out a volunteer application. You can contact Sara, our volunteer manager at sara@familyshelter.org to request an application, sign up for a tour or ask any questions about our volunteer program. After you complete a tour and your application, the final step is to attend a one-hour volunteer orientation. The orientations are held once a month
What kinds of volunteer opportunities do you have?
We use volunteers in almost every aspect of our program. We have listed some of our most frequent volunteer opportunities below. However, if you have any ideas that are not on this list please let us know! We love people that have special skills or great ideas.
Childcare
Childcare for the children of the residents as they seek employment, take a class or just need a break for a few hours.
Computer Lab
Supervising the computer lab by helping the residents find job listings and housing sites. Most hours of supervision are 9am to 12 noon when our childcare center is open. Don’t know alot about computers…no problem!
Donation Center
Sorting donated items and stocking our shelves or you may want a more hands on time at the shelter. You can be a donation Host. Hosts assist the residents in our “Shared Blessings” shopping center. Helping the families find needed food and clothing items and supervising their time in the shop.
Driving
Transporting residents to appointments or interviews on an as needed basis. Copy of your driver’s license and proof of insurance is required.
Family Night
A fun time to interact with the residents, share a meal, play some games, and just have fun. Family Night is on Saturday Evenings from 5 – 9pm.
Fund-raising
If you enjoy helping out at special events, this might be the thing for you. Go to our Request Information page and get in touch with us!
Maintenance
Calling all handy men and women!!! As in any house, things are always needing repair and sprucing up. Can we give you a call?
Mentoring
Spending regular one-on-one time with a resident, encouraging them during this season of their life. This would be set up after a relationship had been built through volunteering on a regular basis.
Moving
Do you have a truck? We get donations of furniture and items that need to be picked up. Some of the items are used here at the shelter and others are saved for the families when they move into their own place. Additionally, we need people (and trucks) who are willing to help move the residents into their new homes.
Prayer Team
We need constant prayer. Visit the Prayer Team page for more information.
Tutoring
Working individually with the kids as need assistance in Math, Reading, etc
Yard Work
Help keep our yards up on a regular basis or just on call.
Again, contact our volunteer manager, Sara, at sara@familyshelter.org if you are interested!
